The price of Ether, the native cryptocurrency of Ethereum, has surged by more than 15 percent overnight, achieving a new all-time high at $1,266.

New All-Time High at $1,266

Four days ago, on January 4, CCN previously reported that the price of Ether established a new all-time high at $1,000, surpassing the $1,000 for the first time in its two-year history. The market valuation of Ethereum surpassed a staggering $100 billion, becoming the third cryptocurrency to do so apart from bitcoin and Ripple.

Merely four days later, on January 8, Ether demonstrated another major increase in value, reaching $1,266 across all global exchanges such as Binance and Bittrex.

The latest rally of Ether has been led by the South Korean market and leading cryptocurrency exchanges within it, including Bithumb, Korbit, and Coinone. Within the South Korean global market, the price of Ether surpassed $1,800, demonstrating a $534 premium over the global average price. That is, a 29.6 percent premium over the global average Ether price.

On Bithumb, the Seoul-based cryptocurrency exchange which recently became the second largest trading platform behind Binance, Ethereum is the third most traded cryptocurrency with a $378 million daily trading volume.

No specific event or movement has led to the increase in the price of Ether over the past few days. The transaction volume and developer activity of Ethereum have been on the rise in general, given that the Ethereum network is currently settling more than 1.2 million transactions per day. The rise in the user activity on the Ethereum network could have led to the price increase of Ether in the short-term.

But, in consideration of the abrupt surge in demand from the South Korean market, it is likely that FOMO or fear or missing out drove the recent price surge of Ether, as the South Korean cryptocurrency exchange market is strongly driven by FOMO.

One minor factor that could have also triggered an increase in demand for Ether is the rise of adoption of decentralized applications like CryptoKitties and EtherDelta that have demonstrated the potential of Ethereum in peer-to-peer digital asset trading.

Arbitrage? Think Again

Although the price of cryptocurrencies in the South Korean market is significantly higher than the global average rates, it is not possible for foreigners to take advantage of the arbitrage opportunity in the South Korean market for many reasons:

  1. Investors need mobile phone numbers to register on South Korean exchanges. South Korean telecoms do not issue (even prepaid sim cards) to individuals without Korean citizenship, residential visa, or work visa.
  2. Investors need bank accounts. But, banks do not open bank accounts to foreigners without residential or work visa. Banks make it hard for citizens to open accounts as well, due to the governments’ recent crackdown on offshore banking accounts and fraudulent bank accounts.
  3. The South Korean government has banned foreigners and underaged investors from investing in cryptocurrencies. South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges cannot accept foreigners into their trading platforms.

Conclusively, the prices of cryptocurrencies in the South Korean market are high because of capital controls. The South Korean market is isolated from the global market and foreigners are not allowed in it. Conversely, South Korean traders cannot open accounts overseas without proper paperwork.

Ethereum scammers disguised as Vitalik Buterin are out to steal your coins

Ethereum scammers disguised as Vitalik Buterin are out to steal your coins
ethereum, vitalik buterin, scam

You might want to be extra suspicious in case you receive an email from Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, cordially asking you to send money: chances are someone is trying to scam you out of your funds.

Buterin has taken to Twitter to warn his followers that malicious actors are pretending to be him in order to trick unsuspecting cryptocurrency rookies into sending them their coins.

“If you get an email that looks like it’s from me asking for ETH, please do NOT send,” the founder cautioned. “Either contact me first or if you’re lazy just assume it’s a fraud.”

If you get an email that looks like it's from me asking for ETH, please do NOT send. Either contact me first or if you're lazy just assume it's a fraud.

— Vitalik Buterin (@VitalikButerin) January 22, 2018

As Buterin goes on to explain, the scammers – posing as him – claim his “laptop literally died” before proceeding to ask for funds – until he has had a chance to access his “cold wallet a week from now.”

Perhaps due to its growing popularity, the cryptocurrency space is flush with various scams and phishing traps these days.

Earlier in January, there were tons of suspicious copycats of popular exchange desk Binance on Google. The majority of these pages were designed to forward visitors to the official Binance site – but via a referral link.

Those curious to investigate some of the active cryptocurrency scams on the internet ought to check out the Ethereum Scam Database here.

Meanwhile, don’t get too excited if you get some mail from Buterin: it’s about as special as getting an investment opportunity from a Nigerian prince.

Stay tuned for the launch of our new channel, Hard Fork, where we will be taking a deep dive into everything cryptocurrency and blockchain.

Ethereum Rises in a Sea of Red

Ethereum Rises in a Sea of Red

Ethereum has reached a new all-time high today of $1,200 per coin just days after it broke that big $1,000 for the first time.

While its trading volumes have increased considerably above $7 billion, with trading pairs seemingly equally spread between BTC, South Korean Won and the dollar.

The currency now has retaken second position with its market cap rising to $114 billion while Ripple has nearly halved to $86 billion.

Much of everything else is down, including bitcoin, while ETH has gained a bit, quickly recovering from a brief sell-off to just below $1,000 to currently trade at $1,160.

There has been no specific news as far as we are aware to propel this rise which began after the announcement Casper had entered testnet.

That’s the last stage of the process before implementation into the live network which might perhaps be expected by summer.

The market, therefore, might be accumulating in anticipation because once Casper launches then ethereum becomes an interest bearing asset, paying dividends like stocks.

That would make ethereum unique among the top digital currencies as it would be the only one to grow the invested capital in eth itself.

The actual details are not finalized as far as we are aware, but you’d probably need quite a bit of eth to stake, in the process so securing the network and earning interest through mining like staking.

But, it is probable the amount doesn’t hugely matter as staking pools would probably rise for the little guys, although it would likely be preferable if solo staking is most accessible to increase decentralization as pools can have significant influence.

The other unfinalized parameter is the level of interest, which for non stakers means the level of inflation. You’d hope it would eventually settle at around 1%-2% a year as that would probably be a level that kind of keeps it at zero due to lost coins, but we’ll have to wait and see what is decided.

The initial implementation of Casper will be a hybrid Proof of Stake/Proof of Work, so miners will still be around, but gradually they will be phased out fully, with ethereum so transitioning to operate from just laptops, without requiring specialized hardware.

No top currency has operated in this manner, therefore few can predict with certainty how exactly incentives will change, but the upgrade will be one of the biggest, to be topped only by Sharding once that comes hopefully by 2020.
